Production Stories
Beautiful You Are by Helen Bruner & Terry Jones Cinematography: by Mike Brand
Helen and Terry wanted to create a positive, African-centric video reflecting their identity as powerful women. The concept was to show the beauty of the rainbow of love and celebrate the contributions of African American musicians. Mike Brand’s exquisite camera work captured the beauty of the space, the art, and the actors. Rodney also paid homage to a favorite film, “When Harry Met Sally,” where the couples share the story of how they met. Helen and Terry said that for the first time, Rodney captured the real Helen and Terry on film.
Powerful by Jonathan Sprout
Jonathan Sprout is a Grammy-winning children’s music performer and an historical song writer. “Powerful” tells the story of Samantha Smart, a girl who wrote a letter to Russian president Yuri Andropov at the height of the Cold War. Some believe that the world-wide acclaim and response to her letter led to Reagan and Gorbachev beginning a dialogue years later.
The concept was to reenact some key moments in the story and celebrate the future by showing children holding powerful positions in the community. One of Rodney’s music students who also had an interest in acting was a perfect lookalike for Samantha, so casting came together easily for this “Powerful” collaboration.
The DePue Brothers Band, When It’s Christmas Time
Rodney is a long time collaborator with the DePue Brothers Band, producing recordings and videos, and directing music videos.
In creating the videos, Rodney worked to capture the feel of a late 1970s to early 1980s local television channel Christmas special celebrating the DePue Brothers Band. With a little set direction and amazing camera work from Mike Brand we were able to capture the feeling and essence of Christmas of the DPB youth.
Songs: Banjo Medley, Linus and Lucy, Winter Wonderland, Good King Wenceslas, Medley of Carols.
